Basic ZAKEF KATON Phrases

The second most common Trope phrase is the ZAKEF KATON phrase. As an individual trope symbol the ZAKEF KATON is commonly referred to as simply the KATON. For the sake of learning we will shorten the trope name to KATON.

Nearly every verse that you will be chanting contains a ZAKEF KATON:זָקֵף קָט֔ן

Also written in the Hebrew like this:קָטֹן

We've colored the KATON symbol red to indicate that you must pause after chanting the word.KATON Helper TropesZAKEF KATON appears a handful of times by itself in Torah and Haftarah. Most of the time, KATON appears supported by other Tropes. One of the Tropes that you have already learned, MUNACH, is found in the basic KATON phrases, often just before the Zakef Katon. The vast majority of KATON phrases include one or more of the following helper tropes:

PASHTAַשְטָא֙

(Many Sephardim use the name KADMA for the Trope (Kadma Symbol) which Ashkenazim call PASHTA)

MUNACH: מנַ֣ח

MAPACH: מַהְַ֤ךְ

(For the advanced student -- a comment about Trope names)

Some Ashkenazim teach that the Munach Trope (Munach Symbol) followed by the Katon (Katon Symbol) are called ZAKEF and KATON. Strictly speaking, and according to most scholars of Biblical Cantillation, the Trope (Katon Symbol) is called ZAKEF-KATON, and the Trope (Munach Symbol) is called MUNACH.

KATON Trope phrasesThe vast majority of KATON phrases take the following forms:ַֹשְטָא֙ קָט֔ןמנַ֣ח קָט֔ןמַהְַ֤ךְ ַֹשְטָא֙ קָט֔ןמַהְַ֤ךְ ַֹשְטָא֙ מנַ֣ח קָט֔ן
